Why we let children choose: reading choose-your-path stories together

Every Little Green Choices book has "What would you choose?" pages. Here's why, and how to get the most out of them.

Why choices?

When children make a choice in a story, they stop listening and start thinking. They wonder what will happen, they care about the result, and they want to try again. A lesson they discover for themselves sticks far better than one they're told.

Gloop's Path isn't "wrong"

When a child picks Gloop's shiny, throwaway option, something funny goes wrong, and then the story invites them to go back and choose again. Mistakes are part of learning, and we want them to feel safe and fun.

Tips for reading choice books

  • Let them choose freely, even when you know where it leads.
  • Ask why. "Why do you think Tara should use the leaves?"
  • Talk about what happened. "What went wrong with the wrapper?"
  • Read it again. Children love trying every path, and each reading teaches something new.
  • Connect it to real life. "We have a choice like that at home. Which would Tara pick?"
